How does a plugin, add-in or add-on differ from each other?
For example, if you search for a Microsoft Office add-in, an Outlook add-in, or another add-in for Microsoft software, you may also encounter terms such as Outlook Plugin, or add-ons, such as Microsoft Teams Add-Ons.
What is the difference between a plug-in, an add-in and an add-on? And what is it about the different spellings of plugin, addin and add on? Let's first start with the definitions of the different terms, and then we can take a closer look at the differences between each computer program. In this report, we'll take a closer look at the add-in.
What is an add-in?
An add-in is a software program that adds additional functionality to an existing application. These small software products are usually created by third-party developers and are usually designed for a specific application. For example, there are some for Microsoft Word and Excel that can add additional functionality to these programs. An addin, plugin or addon all refer to the same functionality of an add-in.
Add-ins of this type come either from the manufacturer of the main program or developed by third parties. An add-in is usually not included in the standard package of the main software, but can be made available later by the user or administrator.
These software programs usually do not work without the main software. An add-in can be installed on a computer (for example, a desktop), a server, or a cloud. There are some free ones and there are some that you have to pay for.
And what does add-ins mean when you translate this term directly?
Add-ins are extensions or additions to an existing program. They can add new functions or extend existing functions.
The word "add" can be derived from English and when translated into German means "to add". The English "in" also has the same meaning as the German "in". So in essence it is an "addition to something", in this case the addition of extra software to a main program.
It is also interesting to note that the terms "plugin", "add-on", "app", "extension" and "integration" are often applied synonymously with the term "add-in". For example, international hardware and software developer Microsoft initially used the term "Apps for Office" for Office extensions such as Outlook 2013. However, since Outlook 2016, Microsoft now refers to these extensions as "Office Add-Ins." This applies to Outlook 2019, Outlook 2021, Outlook for Office 365 and Outlook for Microsoft 365. The reason for this name change is that Microsoft wanted to use the term "Office Apps" for the download versions of its programs such as Excel, Word, Outlook or PowerPoint, for example from Apple's App Store, from the Google Play Store or from the Microsoft Store.
And what is the spelling of the terms addins, plugin, add-on? And when do you use which term?
The spelling of these tools is different, sometimes with hyphen like plug-in, add-on and add-in, sometimes without like plugin, addon and addin. The hyphenated spelling is actually the original spelling. The hyphen was dropped over time and Outlook Add-Ins became Outlook Addins.
In addition, it has become common practice, especially at Microsoft, that when writing with a hyphen, the two words connected by the hyphen must be capitalized, so e.g. Add-On instead of Add-on, Plug-In instead of Plug-in and Add-In instead of Add-in.

How to create a new Microsoft Outlook profile? And how to optimize this transition?
In order to create an Outlook profile, you first need to see what exactly an Outlook profile is, and what the advantages of creating a new profile are.
An Outlook profile is a collection of settings that determine how Outlook connects to e-mail servers to send and receive e-mail messages. The settings in an Outlook profile include the user's name, email address, and password for the account.
Outlook profiles are the heart of Microsoft Outlook. An Outlook profile is set up automatically when you create or start Outlook for the first time. It can be changed later and additional profiles can be created.
Do you also have problems with Microsoft Outlook from time to time that just can't be fixed? For some problems there is no one-size-fits-all solution. Is a complete reinstallation of Outlook the only option? - Fortunately not! Before you resort to a radical reinstallation, try creating a new Outlook profile first. An Outlook profile stores email accounts and references to data files, among other things.
The profile can be used to manage multiple users without the need for them to have their own Windows user profile.
An Outlook profile tends to be prone to errors and therefore may need to be cleaned up, repaired or, in the worst case, freshly created. The problem with re-creation is mainly that all email accounts have to be entered again.
To create a new Microsoft 365 Outlook profile, you need to open the Control Panel and click on the "Mail" icon. Here you need to click on the "View Profiles" button and then click on "Add". You will then be prompted to enter a name for your new profile and select the data file you want to use for it.
When refreshing your Outlook profile, it is important to remember that you will also forget your e-mail address and password settings. So it would be advisable to write down these two pieces of information before deleting the old Outlook profile and use them for the new one.
If you don't want to delete your old Outlook profile, you can try exporting and importing it instead to create an up-to-date version. However, this does not guarantee preserving all the old data in your new profile.
The advantages of an Outlook profile are:
-It can help manage your email accounts.
-It can send and receive emails automatically.
-It can help you schedule and manage appointments.
-You can create your profile to store your contacts and other important information.
Reconfigure Profile - Outlook and Exchange Integration
Before creating a new profile, it may be worthwhile to clean the profile first. The cleaning process will remove invalid profile keys and possibly recreate the default registry keys. It is important to note that Outlook profiles do not store Outlook settings, only settings for email accounts and data files.
How to rebuild and configure the profile?
If your Outlook profile does not work properly, it can slow down the program's startup time and eventually prevent your profile from opening at all. There is no way to fix the problem manually without special tools.
However, gangl offers several solutions that can help synchronize the profile (such as the contacts or calendar). A very good solution is the AddMailbox add-in for Windows. With this integration, you can add or remove your mailbox from Office 365 or multiple accounts. And you can do it with a small effort. The time usually spent on time-consuming individual steps can certainly be put to better use.
Another helpful tool for your Outlook and Exchange is a CRM integration tool that helps to set up customer relevant data in such a way that it can be visualized to better and more strategically plan customer appointments. With ContactsOnMap you not only get detailed location information directly from your Outlook contacts, the software also extends Outlook with valuable contact management features and adds significant value to your daily work.

A few years ago, it was almost impossible to write SMS text messages from your computer and send them to a cell phone number. There were step-by-step instructions, but most of us didn't want to put in that much effort. Nowadays, it's very easy thanks to some great plugins for Microsoft Outlook. All you need is a plugin that connects your Outlook to your phone. Once you have it installed, you can create and send SMS text messages directly from Outlook. There are many different plugins available, but I personally find the "SMS for Outlook" plugin to be the best. All you need is a plugin that you use via Outlook. You can get the plugin here.

Easily set up SMS sending with Outlook
Sending SMS made easy! And the cost is much lower and it's just faster.
But who actually made this invention?
A Swedish engineer named Matti Makkonen (formerly Matti Paavo Airola) developed the first SMS in 1984. In the 80s, cell phones already existed, but they could not yet send text messages.
Matti Makkonen's basic idea was to send short messages conveniently and quickly. Wouldn't that still be practical today? Back then, however, the price of an SMS was very high. Users had to invest a lot of money if they wanted to send a text message to a friend or relative on a regular basis. SMS is still a popular way to send messages today. And now also easy to activate and simply use SMS with Outlook.
If you would like to set up Outlook SMS as well, or for your company, just contact us at +49 (0) 7173 9290-53 or send us an e-mail firstname.lastname@example.org.
